he 2008 National Electrical Code is now in effect in California, with expanded requirements for AFCIs, GFCIs, tamper-resistant receptacles, and numerous changes in wiring methods and equipment. This class includes those changes and rules for services, grounding, bonding, load calculations, panels, multiwire circuits,Codecheck boxes, branch circuits, receptacles, bathrooms, kitchens, switches, lighting, appliances, ampacity, cable systems, raceways, photovoltaics, swimming pools and spas, generators, and special problems posed by older wiring.

Instructor Doug Hansen

Our instructor Douglas Hansen is the principal author of the Code Check Doug Hansenseries of field guides to building codes, with over 1 million copies in print, and the author of Electrical Inspection of Existing Dwellings. Douglas sits on the technical committee for Electrical Systems Maintenance of the National Fire Protection Association. The committee is responsible for NFPA 73 – The Standard for Electrical Inspection of Existing Dwellings.

For several years, he taught residential and commercial electrical codes at the College of San Mateo. He provides seminars around the country to inspectors, building departments, and electricians on building and electrical codes, construction defects, and inspection techniques. He has authored dozens of magazine articles and over 20 books. He holds a general contractor’s license and several ICC inspection certifications. He is a member of the Western Construction Consultants Association, ASHRAE, ICC, NFPA, IAEI, CREIA & ASHI. In 2010 he became a director of the Building Standards Institute, publisher of the California Building Performance Guidelines.
