San Diego’s First Wind Energy Symposium - June 14

San Diego’s First Wind Energy Symposium to Discuss the Benefits of Developing a Local Source of Clean Energy

East San Diego County is home to one of the premier wind resource areas in California, according to the Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative. Four wind energy projects are currently in various stages of planning or consideration near McCain Valley in San Diego County, and if approved, will have a tremendous impact on the region’s ability to successfully meet renewable energy goals and improve air quality.

Recognizing the need for more quality dialogue about the benefits and impacts of developing this abundant, clean source of energy, CleanTECH – in conjunction with other San Diego thought leaders – is planning a half-day San Diego Wind Energy Symposium on June 14, 2011, 8:00 a.m. until Noon, at the Scripps Seaside Forum.

Michael Picker, Senior Advisor to the Governor for Renewable Energy Facilities, Office of the Governor, California, will provide the keynote address.

Moderated by Scott Anders of the Energy Policy Initiatives Center at University of San Diego and California Center for Sustainable Energy’s Peter Hamilton, two panels will discuss such topics as:

  • San Diego County’s Wind Energy Potential
  • California’s Policy Landscape
  • Wind Industry Regulations
  • Wind Turbines and Low-Frequency Sound
  • Wind Energy and Residential Real Estate Values

Tony Haymet of Scripps Institution of Oceanography will give the welcome address.

San Diego has an opportunity to become a leader in sustainable wind energy for California. The recent signing into law of the new Renewable Portfolio Standard by Governor Jerry Brown requires 33 percent of energy to come from renewable sources by 2020.
