The California Center for Sustainable Energy ( CCSE) and Rancho del Rey Middle School organized a joint outreach effort to teach pupils and their parents about the benefits of energy efficiency upgrades in their homes and the Energy Upgrade California Community Savings Initiative that is being rolled out in their neighborhood.
A 3-day curriculum was developed that included 15-minute educational videos on energy efficiency in homes, a do-it-yourself home energy survey and a home energy savings plan. The home energy survey asked students to analyze each day a different type of energy consumption in their home (e.g. lighting, plug load, air conditioning and heating etc.) so they could become conscious about how much energy they are using on a daily basis. With the home energy savings plan, students were encouraged to come up with creative solutions on how to save energy and water in their own homes.
In addition to the curriculum, CCSE and Rancho del Rey Middle School organized two outreach events: the Student Earth Day Fair which focused on the topics of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and the Energy Open House during which students were able to showcase their home energy savings plans to their parents.
