Going Green for Affordable Housing

Experts Help Developers and Advocates Focus on Energy Efficiency and Solar Applications

More than 100 affordable housing developers, housing advocates and green contractors from throughout San Diego County gathered at CCSE on July 16 for a day-long conference on adopting solar energy and energy efficiency for low-income housing.

"Greening San Diego’s Affordable Housing” was sponsored by CCSE’s Multifamily Affordable Solar Housing ( MASH) program and the San Diego Housing Federation, as an opportunity for affordable housing stakeholders to learn about the available clean energy options. Topics ranged from green building and distributed generation to rebate programs and green-project financing. The idea was to consolidate all of the information into one day, according to Jeremy Hutman, conference organizer and CCSE’s MASH program manager.

“With several new incentive programs, along with a substantial amount of federal and state funding available to the affordable housing community for energy efficiency, it was the perfect time to bring this group of people together,” said Hutman. “Many key figures in the San Diego affordable housing community were in attendance, and they heard from 15 industry leaders, including energy consultants, incentive program managers and financial experts.”
Tom Scott, executive director of the San Diego Housing Federation said, "The conference offered a tremendous value to the affordable housing community because it presented, in one place, all of the various incentive programs available to affordable housing developers for energy efficiency and installation of solar electrical generation."

The San Diego Housing Federation is a coalition of individuals, nonprofits and other organizations working together to produce quality affordable housing and community development for lower income households.

Notable & Quotable

"If we get the right kind of energy, there are endless amounts. I think we should be developing every kind of alternative fuel that is available to us. That includes hydrogen to soybeans, from solar to wind. Whatever we can find that is going to help us clean up the environment we should be working really hard on developing."
