Beer that wants to be green

Founded in 1996, Stone Brewing Company of Escondido carries out its commitment to the environment and sustainability in every aspect of their business, from the brewery to its gourmet restaurant.

“Environmental and community responsibility have always been one of the basics for us at Stone,” said Stone CEO Greg Koch. “We see ourselves as part of this greater equation, and we try to be responsive to that, and of course, part of that is being green.”

Surrounding the brewery is a one-acre, park-like garden for dining and relaxing that includes many locally salvaged materials and is 100 percent organically maintained by brewery by-products, such as spent grain compost and used oak chip mulch.

On Stone’s rooftop is a 276.9 kW photovoltaic system that provides 30 to 40 percent of the facility’s electricity needs, producing an estimated annual energy savings of 451,782 kWh and an annual CO2 reduction of 160 tons.

And when the beer leaves the brewery, it goes in company trucks fueled by biodiesel.

Notable & Quotable

"Don't get me wrong: I love nuclear energy! It's just that I prefer fusion to fission. And it just so happens that there's an enormous fusion reactor safely banked a few million miles from us. It delivers more than we could ever use in just about 8 minutes. And it's wireless! ."
