From the Director's Desk:
The wave of green jobs rolling into San Diego is taking shape as federal recovery funds arrive to build a base of education and training. It’s been nearly 10 months now since President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ( ARRA) authorizing $787 billion in federal stimulus funds to state and local governments. Nationwide, governors, mayors and other officials have joined with their community’s leaders to steer as much of the funding to their areas as possible. Read more.
Building Model Urban Solar Projects
San Diego has been selected to receive funding from the Department of Energy’s Solar America Cities program for two special projects that will serve as models for urban solar energy use. One project will outfit a local community center to be an energy self-sufficient emergency center, and the other will help to increase solar energy use in multifamily affordable housing developments. CCSE is a partner with the city on both projects. Read more.
Clean Energy Workforce Training
It was good news for San Diego when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the awarding of $27 million in grants to jump-start the California Clean Energy Workforce Training Program, the largest state-sponsored green jobs training program in the nation. Under the program’s first phase, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District will receive the maximum award of $1,000,000 for a broad-based initiative in which CCSE is participating as a member of the San Diego Green Building Training Collaborative. California Solar Training Partnership
A program providing professional development and curricular support for instructors of solar installation technologies in California has received nearly $3.5 million in funding from the Department of Energy ( DOE). The California Community Colleges, comprised of 110 colleges serving some three million students, will work with CCSE, California Energy Commission and the Labor Management Cooperation Committee (IBEW-NECA) to use the award for creating a statewide standardized training curriculum and certification program for solar photovoltaic ( PV) and solar thermal (both heating and cooling). CCSE will lead the Solar Thermal portion of this program. Read more.
Solar Panel Thefts on Rise
As proof that thieves will steal anything not locked down (and some things that are), solar panels have become the theft du jour in California with reports of rooftop robberies from homes and commercial buildings to public schools and wineries. In Napa County alone, at least 10 wineries have fallen prey to panel thieves during the past 16 months. Read more.
2009 CA Legislative Session Ends
California’s 2009 legislative session ended in September after addressing a host of bills related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy rates and greenhouse gas emissions. Make Your Resume Green One of the ways to get green momentum going in your career is to be a volunteer. Once you have identified some fields that you think would be interesting, volunteer to help out on a project. It could be as simple as staffing an information booth or cleaning up a neighborhood, but once you have your foot in the door, other possibilities will become apparent. Turn your volunteerism into an internship to get even more experience. Before long, you will have not only some new skills, but also the confidence and contacts that will help lead you to your next career move. You can check out CCSE’s volunteer and intern opportunities at our website.

“We face a turning point in our Nation's energy policy. We can either remain the world's leading importer of oil, or we can become the world's leading exporter of clean energy technology. We can allow climate change to wreak unnatural havoc, or we can create jobs deploying low-carbon technologies to prevent its worst effects.” -Phil Angelides, chairman
