The Associated Students of San Diego State University extended their commitment to a more sustainable campus by installing a solar photovoltaic ( PV) system to power the Aztec Aquaplex swim center. New California building standards for energy efficiency that are 15 to 20 percent more strict than previous codes went into effect Jan. 1 in the state’s continuing move toward zero-net energy homes and buildings that will save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. An innovative design for a commercial carport incorporating thin-film photovoltaic panels in a fabric canopy won the inaugural sustainable tensile architecture design competition sponsored by CCSE and SKYShades of Southern California held in December. The winners were three San Diego NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) students – David Mandel, Robbie Bennett and Jason Yang. Read more. Green Learning Adventure Under Way
CCSE's Green Learning Adventure, a new, in-classroom enrichment program about global climate change and sustainable living, was presented for the first time at a parent-student science night at Bethune Elementary School in San Diego’s Bay Terraces neighborhood in November. Greening California Get up to date on the latest innovations and strategies for sustainable living at the Green California Summit and Exposition, March 15-17, at the Sacramento Convention Center. Siobhan Foley Siobhan Foley provides strategic leadership to all facets of CCSE’s public communication efforts and directs the center’s special events, energy education, climate change and marketing teams. Prior to joining CCSE, Siobhan directed marketing and public relations initiatives for Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to clean energy development and watershed restoration based in Portland, Oregon. She also managed outreach for the foundation’s Solar 4R Schools, a solar education program with more than 130 installations nationwide. Her previous experience includes managing marketing and public relations for the off-Broadway, nonprofit LAByrinth Theater Company and at Travelocity. Siobhan holds a B.A. degree in American history and English literature from Columbia University.
If you’re building or doing a remodel, it’s a great opportunity to rid you home of volatile organic chemicals or VOCs that are linked to numerous health problems. While you won’t be able to eliminate every source, avoiding products with high VOC emissions is possible by checking manufacturer reports. There are more than 400 VOCs typically found in homes, with 250 associated with carpeting. Among the tips are install the least amount of carpeting possible, buy only low-VOC paints and use solid wood for counters and cabinets. You’re whole family will breathe easier..
