FREE Motors "Achieving More with Less: Efficiency and Economics of Motor Decision Tools" is a project underway at the Motor Resource Center (partnership of WSU Energy Program and Advanced Energy) and funded in part by the California Energy Commission. As part of an analysis project, the MRC needs old motors for in-lab testing purposes. In exchange for providing the MRC with your old motors, they will replace them with NEMA Premium(tm) motors at no cost (up to 20 per facility, or 100 total motor replacements for the program). The list price value of such new motors typically ranges from $3,300 to more than $13,000 each. Industrial customers are invited to visit the project websiteand download an application to participate. A description of motors being targeted is also provided. Tech Tip
Replace electric motors with high efficiency models whenever possible. Newer NEMA Premium (tm)Efficiency motors are 3-8% more efficient than motors meeting federal minimum efficiency standards. Electric motor systems account for 23 percent of all electricity consumed in the United States and almost 70 percent of manufacturing sector electricity consumption. Because many motors operate 40-80 hours per week (or more), even small increases in efficiency can yield huge energy savings. Energy represents more than 97 percent of total motor operating costs over the motor's lifetime.
Quotables"The nation's aging electromechanical electric grid cannot keep PACE with innovations in the digital information and telecommunications network....Power outages and power quality disturbances cost the economy billions of dollars annually. America needs an electric superhighway to support our information superhighway."

Navy Energy Awareness Weeks (cont.)
During the last week of October and first week of November, local Naval bases held their annual Energy Awareness Weeks. Participating bases were San Diego, Point Loma and Coronado. The events promoted the importance and benefits of energy efficiency, recognized energy program successes, and acknowledged the Navy's commitment to reducing energy costs. The bases were host to energy fairs, symposiums, awards ceremonies, and a fun run. SDREO, SDG&E and local energy vendors participated in the activities.
At each base, one individual was recognized for their demonstrated leadership and initiative that resulted in improved energy efficiency and dollar savings. The San Diego Regional Energy Office Award for Special Achievement in Energy Efficiency was presented to Alice S. Jeffreys at Naval Base Point Loma for her work in HVAC technology addressing direct digital control. At Naval Base San Diego, Joanne Widener was recognized for her role in implementing energy conservation policies. Finally, James John was awarded at Naval Base Coronado for his efforts on retrofit lighting projects. Each award recipient also received a gift certificate for $100 from SDREO.

Program Spotlight: Climate Wise (cont.)
The Climate Wise-Energy Star Program is a public/private partnership committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency and renewable energy. Sponsored by the City of San Diego, SDG&E and SDREO, Climate Wise teams with local businesses to pursue energy efficiency and pollution prevention measures that reduce both greenhouse gases emissions and company bottom line costs. This December, the Climate Wise-Energy Star Program will be hosting a “Peer Exchange” event for local businesses to learn more about the program benefits and opportunities to join.
The Program recognizes partners for “Best in class” industry actions, provides information regarding emission reduction potentials, and conducts “Peer Exchanges” that allow partners to discuss and promote successful business practices. Climate Wise will assist Partners with developing corporate policy, setting performance levels, and increasing energy efficiency awareness among employees. The Program reaches its pinnacle by announcing the Partner of the Year. This award is presented by the Mayor of San Diego and includes recognition by local media coverage, promotional activities with elected officials, and applications to State and National award programs.
The San Diego Regional Energy Office’s Technical Assistance Program (TAP) will provide FREE energy audits to the Climate Wise-Energy Star Partners to help them pursue their energy efficiency goals. TAP will be represented at the “Peer Exchanges” to offer technical assistance for aspiring Partners. For more information on San Diego's Climate Wise-Energy Star® Program, contact
