FREE Motors

"Achieving More with Less: Efficiency and Economics of Motor Decision Tools" is a project underway at the Motor Resource Center (partnership of WSU Energy Program and Advanced Energy) and funded in part by the California Energy Commission. As part of an analysis project, the MRC needs old motors for in-lab testing purposes. In exchange for providing the MRC with your old motors, they will replace them with NEMA Premium(tm) motors at no cost (up to 20 per facility, or 100 total motor replacements for the program). The list price value of such new motors typically ranges from $3,300 to more than $13,000 each. Industrial customers are invited to visit the project websiteand download an application to participate. A description of motors being targeted is also provided.

Tech Tip

Replace electric motors with high efficiency models whenever possible. Newer NEMA Premium (tm)Efficiency motors are 3-8% more efficient than motors meeting federal minimum efficiency standards. Electric motor systems account for 23 percent of all electricity consumed in the United States and almost 70 percent of manufacturing sector electricity consumption. Because many motors operate 40-80 hours per week (or more), even small increases in efficiency can yield huge energy savings. Energy represents more than 97 percent of total motor operating costs over the motor's lifetime.

Motor efficiency varies with load. The efficiency of motors typically peaks at close to 75 percent of full load and is relatively flat down to a 50 percent load point. Most motors are operated at 60 to 75 percent of their rated capacity, and are therefore often candidates for variable speed control as well. The purchase of a new motor often tends to be driven by its price, not the electricity it will consume. However, even a small improvement in efficiency could result in significant energy and cost savings. MotorMaster+ software, developed by Washington State University and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy ( DOE), is a popular and free tool to calculate the savings for premium-efficiency motors.

Featured Display

Name: Occupancy Controlled Stairwell Fixture
Description: This bi-level lighting system, donated by LaMar Lighting, provides occupancy controlled dual level lighting. When a stairwell is unoccupied, the two lamp fixture powers down from 41-Watts to 13-Watts (a 68% energy reduction).
Systems Addressed: Lighting.
Illustrates: Energy savings opportunity for seldom-occupied areas such as stairwells and emergency exits. Combines internal ultrasonic motion sensor technology with multi-level ballast capabilities for applications where full illumination is only required on an occupant triggered basis.

light meterFeatured Instrument

Name: SnP Light Meter
Description: Measures scotopic and photopic lighting levels, or the amount of light registered by the rods and cones (respectively) of the human eye.
Benefits: Ideal for comparing illumination levels using different types of lighting with different color temperatures (3500 K vs 4100 K vs 5000 K) and color rendering indexes (CRI).
Examples of Use: This tool can answer the question of why a 400-Watt metal halide (38,000 lumens) seems to provide more light than a 400-Watt high-pressure sodium lamp (50,000 lumens).
Availability: Loaned free of charge for up to 10 business days. Remember: safety first!

BookFeatured Book

Energy Policies, Regulations & Legislative Updates

The CPUC released a draft decision on October 18th regarding changes to the Self-Generation Incentive Program ( SGIP) (R.04-03-017) for 2005-2007. The draft decision proposes to drop the percentage caps for all technologies and reduces the Level 1 ( PV) rebates from $4.50 to $3.00/Watt. The CPUC proposes a rebate structure that declines over time but did not offer any details. Under the draft decision, SDREO would continue to administer the SGIP through 2007. The DD would also increase the total program funding from $125M to $300M annually, with $216M a year allocated to Level 1 ( PV). This is not final. The Commission received opening comments on November 8th and reply comments are to follow. Then the full Commission will vote on the decision, likely by the end of the year. Click here for the main points of the Draft Decision.

Program Spotlight: Climate Wise (cont.)

The Climate Wise-Energy Star Program is a public/private partnership committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency and renewable energy. Sponsored by the City of San Diego, SDG&E and SDREO, Climate Wise teams with local businesses to pursue energy efficiency and pollution prevention measures that reduce both greenhouse gases emissions and company bottom line costs. This December, the Climate Wise-Energy Star Program will be hosting a “Peer Exchange” event for local businesses to learn more about the program benefits and opportunities to join.

The Program recognizes partners for “Best in class” industry actions, provides information regarding emission reduction potentials, and conducts “Peer Exchanges” that allow partners to discuss and promote successful business practices. Climate Wise will assist Partners with developing corporate policy, setting performance levels, and increasing energy efficiency awareness among employees. The Program reaches its pinnacle by announcing the Partner of the Year. This award is presented by the Mayor of San Diego and includes recognition by local media coverage, promotional activities with elected officials, and applications to State and National award programs.

The San Diego Regional Energy Office’s Technical Assistance Program (TAP) will provide FREE energy audits to the Climate Wise-Energy Star Partners to help them pursue their energy efficiency goals.
