Energy from the Earth
Geothermal provides lower bills & emissions

Bruce Haupt of Mira Mesa installed a geothermal heat exchange system with large rainwater tanks in his yard.

The most unusual place to harvest energy from the sun is perhaps also the most effective and efficient – underground. Earth absorbs nearly 50 percent of the sun’s radiation that reaches the surface and stores it as heat that can be used to warm up or cool down homes and other buildings – without polluting the environment. Improving Building Performance
Affordable steps to boost ENERGY STAR rating

Once a building or facility manager has an ENERGY STAR statement of energy performance in hand they’re ready to set goals for improvements that will raise their rating but are often faced with no budget and minimal management support. The key to turning that situation around is showing how common best practices that cost little or provide quick payback can create both energy and financial savings. Book
Merchants of Doubt
Naomi Oreskes & Erik M. Conway

Seven compelling chapters detail seven issues (acid rain, the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke, the ozone hole, global warming, the Strategic Defense Initiative and the banning of DDT) in which certain scientists aimed to sow seeds of public doubt on matters of settled science. They did so by casting aspersions on the science and the scientists who produce it. Oreskes, a professor of history and science studies at UC San Diego, and science writer Conway also emphasize how journalists and Internet bloggers uncritically repeat these charges.

This rulemaking will address the CPUC’s policies related to an energy efficiency risk/reward incentive mechanism (RRIM), which offers the four major California energy utilities, i.e., Pacific Gas and Electric Company ( PG&E), Southern California Edison Company ( SCE), San Diego Gas & Electric Company ( SDG&E) and Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), incentives to achieve or surpass CPUC-adopted energy efficiency goals and to extend California's commitment to making energy efficiency the highest energy resource priority. Read updates.
California Solar Initiative,
Self-Generation Incentive Program and Other Distributed Generation Issues

This rulemaking continues the work of R.08-03-008, developing and refining policies, rules and programs for the California Solar Initiative ( CSI) and the Self-Generation Incentive Program ( SGIP) and considering policies for the development of cost-effective, clean and reliable distributed generation ( DG). Alternative-fueled Vehicle Tariffs, Infrastructure and Policies
This rulemaking will consider tariffs, infrastructure and policies needed for California investor-owned electric utilities to ready the electricity system in a consistent, near-term manner for the projected statewide market growth of light-duty passenger plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ( PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) throughout California. Read updates.
Sunrise Powerlink Transmission Project
San Diego Gas & Electric ( SDG&E) seeks authority from the California Public Utilities Commission ( CPUC) to construct a 500- kV transmission line in conjunction with several 230- kV transmission lines, expected to run 150 miles between the Imperial Valley to San Diego. Read updates.

Greening Your World® Monthly Tip

Do the Tighten Up

Now is time for closing up air leaks in your home. Caulking not only saves on utility bills, also prevents moisture and insects from entering. Look outside for gaps and holes around door and window frames, wall and roof vents and skylights. Examine around outdoor faucets and where gas pipes and electrical lines enter. Check joints where siding joins at corners and where it meets the roof, foundation and chimney. Choosing the proper caulk for your task from the array of choices can be daunting. Research online or ask for advice at the hardware store.
