Home Energy Retrofit Programs

You could say there has never been a better time for home energy efficiency in California. The state is in the process of spending more than $1 billion on it, the bulk of which is going toward incentives for home energy retrofitting. The long term goal by 2020 is to deliver comprehensive home improvements to all 13 million single-family and multifamily residential units in the state, leading to an average reduction in energy use of 40 percent per household. Solar Rebates Nearly Expended
CSI goes through nonresidential faster than expected

SANDEE Awards

CCSE’s California Solar Initiative program announced in November that the rebate budget for nonresidential solar installations is almost fully committed in the SDG&E service territory. Several circumstances — including higher-than-average solar production in sunny San Diego — resulted in the incentive budget depleting faster than expected. Click here to continue reading.

San Diego Gets Clean Energy
$23.5 million secured to fund nation’s largest fuel cell project

Companies involved in a clean energy venture that will provide an additional 4.5 megawatts of generating capacity to San Diego by mid-2011 announced securing the $23.5 million financing needed for the project in November. Billed as the nation’s largest integrated fuel cell project, it will receive an additional $14.4 million incentive award from the California Public Utilities Commission’s Self-Generation Incentive Program ( SGIP) administered by CCSE in San Diego. SDG&E Rolls Out Solar Smart Meters

Starting this month, San Diego Gas & Electric will begin installing solar-compatible smart meters in select residences across its service area. Previously, smart meters were not compatible with solar PV systems due to software issues that are now resolved. To find out more about smart meters and SDG&E’s installation schedule, please visit www.sdge.com/smartmeter.

New California Energy Websites
Engage 360 and Energy Upgrade California launched

California has two new online resources for energy information, rebates and more that are designed to assist consumers in making wise energy decisions and to inform the building industry about energy and water efficiency programs. The websites will help reduce confusion about the myriad conservation efforts statewide and will provide "one-stop shops" for information regarding energy upgrades in homes and businesses. Gearing Up for CalGreen
New construction now under “green building” codes

A comprehensive blueprint for achieving sustainability in newly constructed buildings and residences will roll out as California’s “green building” code becomes mandatory on Jan. 1, 2011. Once again, California is paving the way in energy efficiency and environmental health with the nation’s first statewide building standards that require advanced building practices to conserve energy, improve indoor air quality, reduce water use and curb greenhouse gas emissions. Display
CanCoverIt

This device securely covers non-IC lights to make insulation installation easier and more effective. Light fixtures often require special attention and may leave large gaps in attic insulation, reducing the effectiveness of the overall installation. Devices like Can Cover It offer a safe, fast and environmentally conscious solution to a small problem with big impacts.

Policy and Planning

Energy Efficiency
This rulemaking continues the work of R.06-04-010 and serves as the forum for the California Public Utility Commission’s continued implementation of the California Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan as well as the forum for initiating the next planning cycle for 2013-15 energy efficiency program plans, funding levels and related issues. Read updates.
Energy Efficiency Risk/Reward Incentive Mechanism (RRIM)
This rulemaking will address the CPUC’s policies related to an energy efficiency risk/reward incentive mechanism (RRIM), which offers the four major California energy utilities, i.e., Pacific Gas and Electric Company ( PG&E), Southern California Edison Company ( SCE), San Diego Gas & Electric Company ( SDG&E) and Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), incentives to achieve or surpass CPUC-adopted energy efficiency goals and to extend California's commitment to making energy efficiency the highest energy resource priority. Read updates.
California Solar Initiative,
Self-Generation Incentive Program and Other Distributed Generation Issues

This rulemaking continues the work of R.08-03-008, developing and refining policies, rules and programs for the California Solar Initiative ( CSI) and the Self-Generation Incentive Program ( SGIP) and considering policies for the development of cost-effective, clean and reliable distributed generation ( DG). Greening Your World® Monthly Tip

The quickest way to eliminate waste during the holidays is to give less, but second best is to skip the wrapping paper. Try hiding gifts around the house and giving kids clues to where they can be found. If you must wrap, use old maps, posters or other reused paper. You can even make the wrapping part of the gift by using scarves, kitchen towels or tablecloths. Canvas grocery bags can also hold gifts. Be creative, not wasteful.
