SAN DIEGO, Calif. (May 13, 2008)— Two high school students are turning a first year science fair into an annual event for 4th through 6th graders in the Del Mar area. This year’s nine student finalists are presenting their projects at the California Center for Sustainable Energy’s ( CCSE) Energy Resource Center, 8690 Balboa Ave. in Kearny Mesa, on Saturday, May 17th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. This unique science fair is designed to increase student awareness by involving them in hands-on science projects to learn about the environment, sustainable energy and the importance of reducing our carbon footprint.

Not your typical science fair, the goal of the Young Scientist Innovation Fair is to have students invent or improve products or processes to increase the use of energy conservation, energy efficiency and/or renewable energy, while decreasing the impacts on the environment. Next year the fair will be expanding to include all of San Diego County.

CCSE has been working with the students to get this green science fair started. The Center helped design a brochure and develop guidelines for the fair. They also helped the students design the AV Angels logo. Including a local humanitarian component, all excess funds raised by the fair will be donated to CCSE’s Rebuild Central Program to help fire survivors.

Notable & Quotable

“With proper air in the tires and driving conservatively, just by driving at regular speeds and not over accelerating, you can save 10% on your gasoline consumption…The issue of energy is key in this election. Demand a policy from each candidate, compare those policies and then vote for the candidate that will help bring the fuel prices down.”
