San Diego Hero Alliance supports more sustainable homes & communities
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (March 13, 2012) - A program to help members of the military and veterans in San Diego make their homes more energy efficient, comfortable and healthful is being sponsored by the California Center for Sustainable Energy ( CCSE). The San Diego Hero Alliance educates military and veteran families on the benefits of home energy upgrades and helps them tap into special offers, financing and rebates.
"Nationwide and locally, the military is taking a strong leadership role on energy efficiency," said Siobhan Foley, CCSE’s director of education and outreach. " CCSE wants to lend its expertise to help military and veteran families implement energy efficiency in their homes as well."
The benefits of home energy upgrades, which include measures such as sealing air leaks, improving insulation and upgrading heating, cooling and ventilation systems, go far beyond lowering utility bills, according to Foley. She said they also can improve indoor air quality, ensure more consistent temperatures, reduce mold growth and decrease the need for home maintenance. The San Diego Hero Alliance helps the military community understand these issues and take action to improve their homes through programs such as Energy Upgrade California™ and low-interest loans.
“Homeowners upgrading through this program are seeing 25% energy savings on average,” said Foley. “What’s even more exciting is how many have told us about improved quality of life and health benefits they’re experiencing with their upgrade, from sleeping and breathing better to reducing their use of allergy medications.”
CCSE will conduct outreach through veterans associations, at workplaces that employ veterans and military family members and at community events across San Diego County. Military and veteran families also can participate by visiting www.sdhero.org.
The San Diego Hero Alliance is part of CCSE’s work for the Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Neighborhood Program. The statewide Energy Upgrade California program provides rebates for home energy upgrades.
