SAN DIEGO, Calif. (September 22, 2008)— San Diego City Councilmember, Tony Young, will join California Center for Sustainable Energy ( CCSE) Executive Director, Irene Stillings, in the presentation of a $31,500 incentive check to Euclid Terrace Apartments’ owner, Kurt Baranski. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and check presentation is being held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, September 29th at the Euclid Terrace Apartments, located at 246 Euclid Avenue in Chollas View.*

The check is part of CCSE’s Solar Water Heating Pilot Program ( SWHPP) offering financial incentives for commercial facilities and residences that install solar water heating. The new solar water heating system will benefit seniors living at Euclid Terrace Apartments, a low-income housing complex. The entire system, comprised of 43 solar-thermal collectors and 11 thermal storage tanks, reduces energy used for water heating by nearly 50 percent and produces an annual savings of $10,000 in utility costs.

“Our community is honored to have the region’s first commercial solar water heating system,” said District Four Councilmember, Tony Young. “In these tough economic times, we are grateful that the Solar Water Heating Pilot Program can reduce the cost of living for deserving seniors, and potentially all San Diegans.”

The Solar Water Heating Pilot Program ( SWHPP) is a trial program available to San Diegans who install qualifying solar water heating systems. The program’s cash incentives offer as much as $1,500 for residents and $75,000 for businesses that transition to solar. By generating heat from the sun, a system can offset up to 75 percent of the natural gas, electricity or propane used for heating water, including industrial processes. The SWHPP runs through 2009, or until the $2.6 million budget is exhausted.

“The Solar Water Heating Pilot Program creates an affordable way for San Diegans to take advantage of sustainable resources, like the sun, and lower their monthly energy costs” said CCSE Executive Director, Irene Stillings. “Solar water heating helps reduce traditional energy consumption, avoids combustion-related emissions and reduces the need for new power plants.”

The California Center for Sustainable Energy, a San Diego non-profit organization, has taken the lead in launching the Solar Water Heating Pilot Program, along with many other renewable energy programs. To continue its mission to increase the adoption of clean solar energy solutions, CCSE will host the fourth annual Solar Energy Week, from October 12th through October18th.

Notable & Quotable

“As individuals, the change can be as simple as replacing traditional light bulbs with efficient fluorescents. In our communities we should require that new buildings include lights that turn off when people leave the room. We should follow the lead of Tokyo and their energy efficient escalators that shut off when they aren't being used. There are literally thousands of things to be done, too few of which we are being asked to do.”
