SAN DIEGO, Calif. (July 24, 2006) – Following the success of last year’s inaugural Solar Energy Week, launched by the nonprofit San Diego Regional Energy Office ( SDREO), the 2nd Annual Solar Energy Week will run from September 24-30, 2006. Held in cooperation with local governments, organizations and businesses, Solar Energy Week will feature a wide variety of events, including SDREO’s 7th Annual San Diego Solar Homes Tour. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently stated his goal of reaching one million solar roofs in the United States by 2010 and announced that the Public Utilities Commission is offering $3.2 billion in consumer rebates, the biggest solar rebate program in U.S. history. With this news, the buzz around solar power continues to escalate. According to a Gallup poll, between 2004 and 2006 the number of Americans who said they worry about the environment “a great deal” or “a fair amount” increased from 62 to 77 percent. Despite this growing concern, most people have little or no idea what solar energy entails. “Last year’s Solar Energy Week drew nearly 3,000 people interested in learning about solar and generating their own power while helping the environment,” stated SDREO Executive Director, Irene M. Stillings. "Whether you''re a novice or an expert, interested in "going green", or just want to save money on your energy bill, Solar Energy Week is the perfect way to get the information you need.” Activities Now Being Scheduled While events are still being added, the current schedule includes: Sunday, Sept. 24 – Family Solar Energy Day: Families learn about solar energy and the environment, while enjoying educational presentations, solar powered car races, fuel cell and hybrid cars, solar oven baking, a sun drawing contest, and free food and drinks. Speakers include San Diego County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and representatives from SDREO, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and QUALCOMM. Tuesday, Sept. 26 – Commercial Solar Tour 2006: Guided bus tour of local commercial businesses showcasing various state-of-the-art solar installations. Wednesday, Sept. 27 – San Diego Solar Energy Conference: An all-day event exploring the ever-changing landscape of solar legislation, trends, technologies and economics with top industry and government experts. Features topics for everyone, from the solar newbie to the solar guru. Saturday, Sept. 30 – 7th Annual San Diego Solar Homes Tour: More than 30 homes across San Diego County will be open to the public showcasing real-world installations of residential solar energy applications. Major Sponsors Lined Up QUALCOMM, Inc., SDG&E and Supervisor Slater-Price have pledged substantial support for the event with additional sponsorship from BP Solar, Kyocera Solar and Independent Energy Solutions. Last year, many local governments, including the cities of San Diego and Chula Vista, and the County of San Diego, recognized Solar Energy Week with formal proclamations, promotional support and participation; SDREO expects the same support for this year’s event.

Notable & Quotable

"I urge individuals around the world to stand up, and ask local leaders, if they haven't already, to pledge to purchase cleaner cars, build green facilities, and buy green power like wind or solar energy. Our actions may determine if we become a casualty in the war for a habitable planet for generations to come."
