Solar water heating (SWH) systems reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve fossil fuel resources, while cutting energy use and saving money on utility bills. Systems can offset up to 75% of the natural gas, electricity or propane used by your current water heater. SWH systems work to supplement the existing water heater - you do not need to replace or remove it.
SWH systems preheat the water used in a home or business (such as showers, dishwashers or sinks) and can help protect consumers against future gas and electricity shortages, as well as price increases. They help preserve the environment by eliminating carbon dioxide emissions and reducing harmful pollutants. For more information visit the Solar Water Heating Resources.
In October 2010, the CSI Nonresidential Program in SDG&E territory exhausted its budget. Consequently, the CSI-Thermal (Solar Water Heating) Program’s budget for electric-displacing Commercial/Multifamily projects has been exhausted, since it shares the rebate budget with the CSI Nonresidential Program. Further incentives for this program may be available if previously reserved projects drop out of the CSI Program. Therefore, CCSE recommends that applicants continue to submit reservation requests to be included on the CSI Non-Residential Project Waitlist. For more information regarding the interim Wait List process, please click here.
It is important to note that this budget issue does not affect any of the following types of Solar Water Heating project applications:
- Electric-displacing Multifamily projects that are under a residential rate schedule with SDG&E (Multifamily projects under a commercial rate schedule with SDG&E will be waitlisted)
- Gas-displacing Commercial/Multifamily Solar Water Heating projects
- Single-family Solar Water Heating projects
