On Saturday, October 18th CCSE celebrates the ninth annual solar homes tour, with more than 40 homes throughout San Diego County participating! This self-guided tour offers real-life, working examples of three residential solar energy technologies: solar electric (photovoltaics) and solar water heating. This year’s participating homeowners are excited to display their solar systems, answer questions about the technology and share their stories and enthusiasm. “We were thrilled when solar technology reached a point where it was viable for residential use,” said Janette Kimmel.
Prior to installing solar panels, the Kimmels learned it is important to incorporate additional efficiency measures to lower energy costs. “Our home was built with SIP’s panels, which have incredible insulation properties, “ said Kimmel. “As a result we have not needed an air-conditioning unit in our home and we rarely find it necessary to use the heating system. “ Following the installation of their PV System, Kimmel says she noticed a significant reduction in energy costs.
“Our bill for the month of November without the system was $600 but the following month with solar panels, it was $11.00, “said Kimmel. “We are very pleased with the system’s performance.”
