It’s the ultimate idea in reducing the number of vehicles on the road—carpooling. You leave your car at home while joining with other happy commuters who are reducing their stress and saving money at the pump. You can learn how to start carpooling at Street Smart from Enterprise Rideshare and SANDAG’s RideLink.

Rideshare is a rental car or van for 7 to 15 people who are going to the same work location. You get the whole package, from insurance to roadside assistance, for a reasonable monthly charge. RideLink is a database of other commuters who also want to rideshare. You sign up and get a personalized (and privacy-protected) list of potential carpool partners—then simply hook up and ride away. There’s even a Guaranteed Ride Home clause.
