The Mini E, an electrified Mini Cooper, will be on display at Street Smart. Although still considered as an R&D project by BMW, a few hundred of the all-electric wonders have been rolled out on a limited-lease basis in Southern California, New York and New Jersey. Unveiled at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, more than 1800 people applied for the 450 cars that have been offered so far, even though the lease is a whopping $850 a month. Under the hood is a 150kW, 200+ hp electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a range of 150 miles. The motor produces 162 foot-pounds of torque, propelling the car from 0 to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds. Top speed is limited to 95 mph. The battery charges in about eight hours from a standard outlet, but BMW also offers a high-amp wall box that reduces the charging time to 2.5 hours.
Strictly an in-town commuter car, the Mini E seats two with about enough room behind them for a bag or two of groceries.
