San Diego is moving into the forefront of plug-in electric vehicle technology advancement with the Aug. 5, 2009, announcement by the White House that San Diego will be one of five metropolitan areas to receive ARRA Stimulus Funds through the Department of Energy for testing the effectiveness of a charging infrastructure supporting widespread electric vehicle deployment.
Electric Transportation Engineering Corporation ( eTec), a subsidiary of ECOtality, is partnering with Nissan North America to deploy up to 1,000 electric vehicles in San Diego and to install a charging infrastructure at residential, commercial and public locations. Nissan’s zero emission vehicle, the LEAF, will be coming to San Diego dealerships next year, two years earlier than the rest of the nation.
Partners with eTec in the DOE proposal were SDG&E, the San Diego Association of Governments, San Diego Clean Fuels Coalition, Miramar College, UC San Diego and CCSE.
