Depending on the type of electric vehicle a consumer decides to purchase, plug-in electric vehicle ( PEV) owners are faced with several scenarios on how to charge their PEV. Since roughly 80% of charging takes place at home, it is critical that homeowners understand their charging options. First, a homeowner may plug their vehicle into a conventional 120-volt household outlet or install a 240-volt circuit for faster charging. PEVs come with a 120-volt charging cord that enables PEV owners to charge their PEV with a conventional 120-volt outlet.
This is a very practical solution for owners of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, such as a Toyota Plug-in Prius or Chevrolet Volt. On the other hand, charging a PEV at 240 volts, which takes about half the time to charge than compared with 120 volts, will require the installation of a dedicated circuit and charging station at your home. In most cases, the homeowner will also be required to obtain a permit from their local jurisdiction.
