San Diego Energy Resource Center Displays

The San Diego Energy Resource Center ( SDERC) consists of two main areas: the Technology Center and the Learning Center. Various interactive and static (e.g. poster) displays are dispersed throughout both areas. Applicable from 6th grade students on up, and for energy experts as well as novices, these displays educate visitors on concepts and components involved, relative impacts of alternatives, and provide additional resources and information on the subjects covered.

1. Lighting display – features lighting alternatives for different applications. For instance the fixture bank by the windows has dimmable ballasts for lighting in offices with windows. The chart near the display indicates each lighting system's features and benefits.

2. Daylighting – uses natural light thus reducing the need for artificial light. Though we used a residential tubular skylight for illustrative purposes, commercial and industrial customers are becoming increasingly aware of this option to reduce energy costs .

3. Exit signs – read right to left with the most efficient on the left and the least on the right. The electroluminescent lasts for 30 years with no maintenance while the incandescent requires bulb changes about every three months.

4. Streetlight – High pressure sodium is the lamp of choice for San Diego according to the San Diego City Council. The LED streetlight is an emerging application where limitations exist on light pollution and focused, directed light is required.

5. Stoplight – This is an LED application success story. Most of the red lights have been changed to LEDs and municipalities are now converting green to LEDs.

12. Energy and Water – they are closer linked than most people know. Energy is used to bring water to San Diego but faces some of the same issues as electricity does.

13. Residential House – cutaway features more than twenty constructive ideas for HVAC energy efficiency, everything from solar shingles to insulation adn an electric window.
