Variable Speed Pump

This circulation pump has an integrated variable frequency drive (VFD) that can be programmed to vary its speed to maintain a pressure set point or to match a demand for flow. VFDs can be retrofitted onto most existing pumps of various sizes and applications.

Reducing the speed of a pump when full speed is not required saves energy. A 20 percent speed reduction with a VFD can result in a 50 percent reduction in energy use. Also, running at a reduced speed will reduce wear and tear on the motor, extending the motor life and reducing maintenance costs. Contrary to popular belief, VFDs do not always cost more than magnetic starters; in some cases, traditional starters can be more expensive than VFDs.

A few good applications for variable speed pumping are chilled water pumps, heating hot water pumps, condenser water pumps, domestic water booster pumps, swimming pool circulation pumps and irrigation pumps.
