Climate change and sustainability brought to classrooms

CCSE is launching the Green Learning Adventure, a new community education initiative to teach elementary and middle school students about global climate change and sustainable living, with initial funding and strong support from the Sempra Energy Foundation. According to CCSE Climate Change Program Manager Andrea Cook, the classroom sessions will provide youth with information that they can act on immediately to reduce their carbon footprint and save energy.

“There has been a high level of demand from school administrators, teachers and students for such a green learning program, and CCSE is proud to be taking the lead in California,” Cook said. “We will be gearing our program for fifth through eighth grade students, but the take-home message will benefit their parents and other adults as well.”

To date, the San Diego and Carlsbad school districts have signed on for the Green Learning Adventure. The first program will be at Bethune Elementary in Paradise Hills on November 12. Cook said the Green Learning Adventure team will visit several classrooms at the school leaving behind information on what the students can do in their lives and at home to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and implement other sustainable practices.

Green Learning Adventure is kicking off with sponsorship from the Sempra Energy Foundation. The foundation made a $43,000 grant to the program, and CCSE is currently seeking additional sponsors. If your company or foundation is interested in donating matching funds or providing in-kind support, please contact Siobhan Foley, CCSE director of education and outreach, to learn more about the program at (858) 244-7292.

The program will offer hands-on, fun educational activities about energy consumption and the carbon cycle, while reinforcing literacy, math and science skills. Among the green learning topics are energy efficiency, renewable energy, product packaging, water-energy connections, green products, vampire energy loss and transportation. Cook anticipates more than 6,000 students will participate in the program over the next two years.

Cook, who holds a doctoral degree in climate change sciences, taught high school in San Diego for five years prior to working for CCSE. Schools, youth groups and other community organizations that are interested in hosting a Green Learning Adventure should contact Cook at (858) 244-4869.

Green Tip

You can save substantially by washing and rinsing at cooler temperatures. Warm water helps the suds to get at the dirt, but cold-water detergents will work effectively for just about everything in the hamper.
