The Green Learning Adventure engages people of all ages in fun, hands-on activities that provide practical solutions to help us live more sustainably. The Green Learning Adventure also provides special outreach to 5th – 8th grade students in underserved areas of San Diego County. These lessons empower, inspire and educate youthful minds about green career paths, while reinforcing literacy, math and science skills. The enrichment programs are presented by the California Center for Sustainable Energy in San Diego, CA.
Andrea Cook, CCSE climate program manager, leads the fun-filled learning experiences for students, teachers and the public. Current activities include lessons on energy efficiency, vampire appliances, pedal power, renewable energy, green building materials, life cycle analysis, absurd packaging and fresh and frozen foods. A perennial favorite is Pedal Power – the human-powered energy bike that demonstrates how much electricity it takes to run lighting and other household items. How many incandescent, compact florescent or LED light bulbs can you light up? Can you run a fan or hairdryer? While pedaling, the energy hogs become clear immediately!

Through the generous support of partners, the Green Learning Adventure has reached more than 16,000 San Diegans since the program launched in November 2009. We’ve held more than 75 sustainability events to date, and at each one, the Green Learning Adventure team leaves behind information and handouts for what students, their families and teachers can do at home and at school to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and implement other sustainable practices.
Major funders for the 2011-2012 school year include the Walmart Foundation and the Self-Generation Incentive Program. Past school years have been supported by the Sempra Energy Foundation, the Walmart Foundation, Sempra Utilities, and Union Bank of California. Additional funding is being sought. You can become a partner and help us reach more people by donating today.

A TV with a remote could use more energy during the 20 hours it is turned off waiting for you to turn it on than it does while you are watching it for 4 hours in the evening. Vampire energy amounts to about 5% of energy consumed in the United States and usually costs consumers more than $3 billion each year.
