Automated Demand Response Workforce Development Project

Automated demand response (Auto-DR) is a critical tool for achieving electric grid stability and meeting California’s energy efficiency targets. To realize Auto-DR’s full potential, this program addressed workforce skills gaps by educating contractors and electricians and providing technical assistance to support Auto-DR deployment in small and medium businesses.

Funded by the California Energy Commission under the Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC), the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE) led a four-year training program to support the adoption and proper installation of Auto-DR technology statewide. The program also accelerated the installation of Auto-DR communications equipment by recruiting and enrolling 200 small and medium buildings (< 500 kilowatt peak demand) and public facilities in disadvantaged communities (DACs) into utility demand response incentive programs and provided technical assistance to contractors to promote proper installation.
