Valencia Park/Malcolm X Branch Library

The Valencia Park/Malcolm X Branch Library was constructed in 1995 and serves more than 25,000 visitors each month with a staff of 13 employees. It has study and seminar rooms, a staff workroom and a multipurpose room for hosting groups and community events. The library also includes a newly renovated Teen Tech Center that features a recording studio and computer lab.

Prior to the installation of energy efficiency measure and solar (pre-retrofit), the library consumed approximately 1,200 MMBtu of energy annually consisting of more than 280,000 kWh/year in electricity and approximately 190 MMBtu/year in natural gas. Electricity accounted for about 90 percent of the library’s energy consumption, peaking in the summer months. Electricity is consumed primarily for lighting and HVAC, with the peak generally occurring in the summer months to meet an increased air conditioning load.
