Carlsbad Home Combines Solar, Energy Efficiency and Electric Car

Janet and Oscar Valent of Carlsbad have made sustainable energy a way of life. Since purchasing their 1947-built home five years ago, they have renovated it to use far less energy and stay more comfortable throughout summer and winter.

The renovation process started with a home energy assessment, which revealed a leaky building shell and poor insulation. They worked with an Energy Upgrade California™ Home Upgrade participating contractor to fix these deficiencies and install high efficiency lighting, heating and appliances. A couple of years later, they added solar panels to offset the remaining amount of electricity needed to operate their home and charge an electric vehicle.

"We were highly motivated to make our home more comfortable and reduce our monthly costs for heating and electricity," said Janet. "By making our house energy efficient and adding a solar electric system for our home and electric car, we believe we are doing our part for the environment."

To share their sustainable home with neighbors, the Valents are offering free, educational tours this fall. Visitors can talk with them about their energy savings as well as the contractor who performed the energy improvements and home energy coaches from CSE.
