Energy Code Coach

As California moves toward zero net energy building standards for new construction and major renovations, state energy codes are becoming more complex, making compliance increasingly difficult for local building department staff to implement and enforce.

The Center for Sustainable Energy offered building departments a turnkey solution customized to each jurisdiction’s particular needs and procedures.

Why an Energy Code Coach?
The Energy Code Coach provided in-person expertise to local government building departments to efficiently implement new standards every three years and overcome widespread code compliance challenges. While the coach was available to provide direct assistance to applicants, the coach’s ultimate goal was to equip staff with the knowledge and tools necessary to aid applicants in complying with the code.

What Does an Energy Code Coach Do?
The Energy Code Coach is an expert in Title 24, Parts 6 (Energy Code) and 11 (CALGreen), with knowledge in plan checking and inspections and experience working with building department staff. The coach spent one to two days per week at the building department, working collaboratively with plans examiners, counter techs, inspectors, planners and applicants. Better-informed staff members are able to address applicant needs expeditiously.
