SAN DIEGO, CA (JUNE 17, 2025) — Clean energy entrepreneur, investor and strategist Jigar Shah, former director of the U.S. Department of Energy Loan Programs Office, has joined the Board of Directors at the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE), a national nonprofit focused on clean transportation and distributed energy resources.
During 2021-2025, Shah transformed the Energy Loan Programs Office, overseeing a tenfold increase in loan authority and deploying $108 billion in debt financing for clean energy and advanced transportation projects across the nation.
“I’m honored to join CSE at such a pivotal moment in the nation’s transition to clean energy," Shah said. "We urgently need real-world, scalable solutions, and this organization is at the forefront of making that happen through its data-driven design and administration of over $4 billion in incentive programs across the country.”
According to CSE President Lawrence Goldenhersh, Shah brings a remarkable track record of advancing bold ideas to scale, exercising strategic leadership and forging market-driven solutions to climate and clean energy challenges.
"Jigar Shah has consistently demonstrated how the adoption of clean energy solutions can be accelerated by combining innovative financing with strategic leadership,” Goldenhersh said. “His experience aligns seamlessly with CSE’s mission to drive a sustainable and equitable energy transition. Jigar is a wonderful addition to our world-class board of energy and transportation leaders, and we are excited about adding his unique power to our team."
"Addressing the climate crisis requires leaders who understand that market-based solutions that advance clean energy goals without sacrificing profitability are required to enable this transition,” said CSE Board Chair Bryan Garcia. “Jigar Shah’s commitment to building a clean energy economy and his focus on practical, finance-driven strategies reflect the values at the heart of CSE's work."
Shah has more than 25 years’ experience in clean energy. Prior to joining the DOE, Shah co-founded and served as president of Generate Capital, a sustainable infrastructure company that largely invented low-cost, infrastructure-as-a-service financing. He also founded SunEdison, where he pioneered third-party power purchase agreement solar financing, and he served as the founding CEO of the Carbon War Room, a global nonprofit founded by Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Unite to help entrepreneurs address climate change.
Currently, Shah is co-managing partner of Multiplier LLC, a boutique advisory firm helping clean energy, cleantech and climate tech companies accelerate their growth. He also co-hosts the podcast “Open Circuit” from Latitude Media and is the author of “Creating Climate Wealth: Unlocking the Impact Economy,” which outlines his mission to scale the transition to a global clean energy economy.
CSE specializes in the data-driven design and administration of large-scale market transformation incentive programs for solar, storage, energy efficiency, electric vehicles and electric vehicle charging.
